Hair Porosity
What is hair porosity? Do you know? I didn’t, at least not until recently. But hair porosity is how well (or not!) your hair absorbs moisture. Low porosity hair does not absorb moisture well and product build-up happens quickly. High porosity hair is normally damaged hair that absorbs moisture too quickly and cannot not retain moisture. There are solutions to both issues, and I have answers and products that may help improve your hair porosity!
How To Fix Porous Hair. Here is My Story!
I have naturally coarse, curly hair. And I have hypothyroidism. Not a good combination! I always had thick hair, but right before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I had at least 1/4 of my hair fall out. Add to that high porosity hair due to all the processing and heat damage, and my hair was a mess! Dry, brittle and I could never get my hair length much longer than my shoulder length due to breakage. And all the products I am suggesting are products that I have used on myself and family. And we have had amazing results! At 49, I have better hair now than even in my twenties!
Best Hair Product! Yes, I found it!
I found a product that made my hair amazing! Just over a year ago I was fortunate enough to meet someone who introduced me to an amazing product. At the time, I was only looking for a product that did not have a ton of chemicals and would help correct all the damage I had done to my hair. What I did not know is how much this product would not only help re-grow my lost locks but also make it smooth, shiny and beautiful. There’s nothing I would love more than to help others with similar hair porosity issues find their way to their best hair ever.
The “HAIR” Test
What is my hair porosity? I wasn’t able to find the perfect solution and product for my hair until I understood what my hair was telling me. Luckily, there is an easy hair type quiz to see what your hair porosity is before determining what products can help your hair situation!
Hair Strand Test
- Get a clear glass or bowl and fill it with water.
- Take a clean hair strand and place it in the water.
- Analyze the results!
- If your hair strand sinks, you have high porosity hair
- Hair floats on the top and it takes significant time to sink, you have low porosity hair.
- If your hair strand floats to the middle of the glass then you’re in luck and have medium, or normal, hair porosity!
Low Porosity Hair
Low porosity hair characteristics include hair that is resistant to absorbing moisture, products sit on hair, and it takes a long time for hair to dry since hair cuticles are closed and the moisture does not enter your hair easily. If you have low porosity hair, it may look healthy but it is lacking in moisture and volume. If you feel like hair conditioner doesn’t seem to be effective, then you likely have low porosity hair that isn’t absorbing moisture well. There is no way to completely change low porosity hair, however, by using the correct low porosity hair product, your hair can be shiny, beautiful and healthy!
Low Porosity Hair Products
Fortunately, there are ways to improve your low porosity hair regimen. Several times a month you need to use a clarifying shampoo. This will help reduce the build up on your hair caused by low porosity. For the rest of the month use a non-toxic shampoo for either volume or hydration. Good quality, non-toxic products. You should also utilize low porosity hair oils. To do so, implement an oil treatment one time per week (overnight is best) that penetrates the hair shaft so you receive the benefits of your everyday shampoo and conditioner that will compound the much needed moisture & nutrients. Low porosity hair characteristics are okay, you just need to know how to care for your hair!
I use an oil treatment that is proven to penetrate all three layers of the hair shaft, the only product on the market that is clinically proven to do so! This also helps reduce build up on the hair shaft itself. If you want to color you hair but color never lasts long or dulls quickly, you can ask your stylist to add 2-3 drops of the oil in each color bowl. This helps open the hair shaft for the color to penetrate! If you purchase the oil treatment, remember it is very concentrated and will last a long time if used properly. Mine has lasted for over a year!
High Porosity Hair
Characteristics of this hair type can be the result of chemical damage, heat damage, UV damage and a variety of other sources. Hair with high porosity easily takes in water from the atmosphere which can cause frizziness. If you color your hair, the color can fade quickly due to the hair structure not being able to hold onto the colorant. It also cannot hold onto moisture for long. The damaged hair cuticles allow moisture to flow through the hair structure without any retention. This makes the hair look and feel dry, coarse and brittle. So you want to correct this problem sooner rather than later!
Suggested Products
Here is how to get started! I started using a non-toxic oil treatment one time per week. 15 minutes before bed I would put about 4-5 drops into my hands, rub them together then massage into my hair and scalp. In the morning I would wash with a concentrated non-toxic shampoo and conditioner.
All the products I use are non-toxic and have NO silicone. The best products for high porosity hair also promote hair growth and will start to repair the damage caused by over processing. I use the volume system, even though I don’t need more volume. The reason for this is I feel it keeps my curls and mane under control better than the hydration system.
All the systems I suggest are very concentrated and should last 3-4 months. There is also a 30 day money back guarantee on all products! What more can you ask for? We also have a split end repair product and a effortless smoothing system with a blowout cream that you will fall in love with!
