Grilled Cheeseburgers, Martha Stewart Style
My daughter and I have been frequenting the Williams-Sonoma cooking classes. And wow! I have learned some great tips and tricks that I will be sharing! I love to cook and have been doing it for a long time, but even the most seasoned cook can learn new tricks! So let’s get started on making the best Grilled Cheeseburgers, Martha Stewart style!
Tips For Grill Prepping!
Here are a couple tips when getting started to grill. I love grilling on the back patio, but when it is super hot and muggy, I would rather be in the cool air conditioning. Or in the dead of winter, do you really want to be outside? Here is a solution for you that not only cooks faster, but doesn’t heat up the kitchen like the broiler in your oven will, it is an electric smokeless grill! Until recently, I had never heard of a smokeless grill. And it is amazing! I got mine through Amazon and it works great! We have made burgers, grilled angel food cake and sausage. Beautiful grill lines, absolutely NO smoke and everything cooked just a little bit faster than my traditional grill and oven broiler. Which is always a plus! Here are some other tips for you to remember!
- Keep your burger patties cold until just before grilling!
- “Smashing” your burgers before cooking reduces the juices. I love juicy burgers, so I suggest not using this technique!
- Form your burgers slightly bigger than your bun, this allows for “shrinkage” during the cooking process
- Make an indent in the middle of your burger to prevent it from “puffing” up while cooking. I provide a picture in the recipe as an example!
The Recipe
The recipe I am sharing is a modification of Martha Stewart’s favorite cheeseburger recipe from her book Martha Stewart’s Grilling. Unfortunately, the original recipe is for eight burgers. As we have a much smaller family, I adjusted the recipe to fit our needs and it makes four 1/4 pound burgers.
Grilled Cheeseburgers, Martha Style!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- 1/2 cup Grated Swiss Cheese
- 2 tsp Prepared Horseradish *the original recipe called for fresh, but I went with convenience!
- 1 lbs Ground Beef *I used 93% lean
- 2 tbsp Worstershire Sauce *This is my add!
- Ground Salt/Pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup Mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp Ketchup
- 4 Sweet Hawaiian Onion Burger Buns *or your favorite burger bun!
- 2 tbsp Melted Butter
- 8 Slices Pre-cooked Bacon
- Sliced Tomatoes *optional
- Sliced Red Onion *optional
- Bread and Butter Pickles *optional
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl add ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Combine until thoroughly blended. Divide into 4 equal sections and form your patties. Make an indent in the center of each patty to prevent them from "puffing" up during the cooking process!
- Turn on your smokeless grill and let it heat up! Once your patties are formed, lightly oil the grates on your grill. Grill the burger patties for 3-4 minutes on each side. I found the grill cooks a little faster than a normal grill, so be sure to watch your burgers!
- While your burgers are cooking. Combine the grated cheddar and Swiss cheeses with the horseradish in a small bowl and mix well.
- Once you flip the burger patties, top each with 1/4 cup of the cheese and horseradish mixture. Cover your grill with aluminum foil to melt the mixture. Covering it creates enough heat to melt the cheeses! You can place your pre-cooked bacon on at this time too!
- Combine mayonnaise and ketchup; set aside. Brush the split side of each burger bun with melted butter and grill for 30 seconds. Or until lightly toasted.
- Place burgers on toasted buns and top with bacon, mayo-ketchup mixture, tomato, lettuce and onion! Then enjoy!!!

You tip about shrinkage is so awesome!!! I always make the burgers the size of the bun, and of course they always shrink. Not sure why I didn’t think of this! LOL. Thanks so much!
