Date Nut Bread Recipe
Growing up my mom used to make the best date nut bread! It is just sweet enough and when warmed with a light layer of cream cheese, it is divine! The date nut bread recipe I have made today is not the one my momma makes, but I think it is just as good, if not a little better! (Sorry mom!) But it still brings back wonderful memories of my childhood. So I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Definitely a little different than your typical sweet bread recipes. It just has a little bit of a healthier twist!
Date Nut Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Pecan Chips
- 1 cup Pitted and cut up Dates (8-10 dates) *you can buy the dates already pitted
- 1 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 3 tbsp Shortening
- 3/4 cup Boiling Water *boiling, hot tap water is not going to be hot enough
- 2 Eggs
- 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
- 1 1/2 cup Sifted All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
- 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
- 1/4 cup Packed Brown Sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease ONE 9"x 5"x 3" loaf pan and set aside.
- Mix pecans, dates, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. Stir to combine, then pour boiling water over mixture and let it sit for 20 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, beat eggs until foamy. Then beat in vanilla, sugars, shortening, spices and SIFTED flour. Mix until thoroughly combined.
- Add date mixture to flour mixture and stir until just blended. (Date mixture is slightly watery before adding to other ingredients)
- Scrape into loaf pan and bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 5 minutes. Or until done. I placed a piece of tin foil over the top of my bread around the 45 minute mark as I didn't want it to get over brown. Let stand for 10 minutes after pulling out of the oven and enjoy!
- **We heat up slices of bread in the microwave for about 5-10 seconds (depending on the thickness of the slice) and serve with whipped cream cheese!

I’ve never cooked with dates, but this looks like a great bread recipe!
Kelly
This is actually the only thing I make with dates! =)
Yolanda
This looks soooo good! I have dates, but I feel like I’m boring as the only baked good I ever eat with dates ate date squares, which I do love! I need to try your recipe! I also love making loaves so this will be a nice change from the typical banana or zucchini bread I make.
Kelly
I hope you love it!!

Well I don’t have any dates right now but will put them on the shopping list. Will be saving your recipe and giving it a try.
Kelly
This is an oldie but goodie!!!!

I just put this in the oven. I noticed you call for 3 Tbs shortening in your ingredients list, but no mention of it in the directions. I’ve made my Moms recipe, for date nut bread, and just happen to know that you add the shortening in with the boiling water that you pour over the date and nut mixture. Is this correct for your recipe as well?
Kelly
Thank you for bringing that to my attention! This is a family recipe from my great, great Grandmother! And she added the shortening to the sugar and eggs. Which I corrected on the recipe!!!! But I am sure either way would give it the extra moisture it needs! I hope it turned out delicious!
