DIY Chunky Knit Blanket

I have been hearing about how easy it is to make a chunky knit blanket.  So I decided to try it for myself and see what all the hype is about!  This was an easy DIY, however, it did take al little longer than I expected.  But let’s get started on this DIY Chunky Knit Blanket journey!

What do you need?

All you need is 5 or more rolls of chunky knit yarn.  No knitting needles necessary! I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby. When it was on sale of course!  When choosing a yarn type, I went with the softest yarn I could find.  17.5 oz. at 30 yards each. So it was a little more expensive ($60 after the 50% discount)  and the blanket was heavy when completed, but it is so very soft!  And I decided to use two different colors, it was much easier to do than you might think!

Use a chunky knit yarn for this project. It can be any type of yarn such as chenille or a jersey fabric. It just needs to be thick.

How to get started

After much consideration and the reviewing of several “how to” videos I was ready to get started!  I included the video I found to be the best in explaining how to get started. And don’t be fooled, not all videos are the same!  That is why I decided not to do a video of my own.  Some were clear and precise others, not so much.  But I did the leg work for you and found what I consider to be the best “how to” video for making a chunky blanket! More about the video later!

Some items to keep in mind

Here are some the items to keep in mind when starting:

  • The suggested width is 15-25 rows across.  I did 25 rows.
  • It took me under 4 hours to complete
  • I worked at the kitchen table.  I noticed many of the DYI’ers were on the floor, but I was more comfortable sitting at a table.
  • Remember, if you make a mistake, it is easy to correct!

Below is the video that helped me create my lovely DIY Chunky Knit Blanket!

Some more tips!

Don’t let your loops “twist” at the base.  I had to “re-do” two rows because of this!  Don’t make the same mistake as me!

loop twist
Make sure your loops don’t twist!

When you finish a roll you can weave the excess into the back of your blanket.

Weave the excess of one roll of yarn through the loops on the back of your blanket.

In under four hours I completed my DIY Chunky Knit Blanket!  And I love it!

Conclusion

I started this project to see how easy it was to create a Chunky Knit Blanket.  It went much easier than I thought it would.  And if you purchase a less expensive yarn you could easily make one for less than $35.  A great gift idea for the holidays!Next Sign

I had to watch the video a couple times before I started, just to make sure I had it right. But it was super simple once I started!

It looks great! I’ve had the hardest time finding affordable yarn. I’m considering using this one but my daughter is actually wanting the thicker one you see most made from. In your search did you find anything similar to that that is affordable?

Honestly, go to Joann.com. They had an extensive variety to choose from. Much better than Hobby Lobby or Michael’s. I didn’t know this until after I had already made my blanket. They also have better pricing!!

It was about 3×5. Depending on how many rows you go in each direction! =)
