Lets face facts, Mom’s LOVE DIY gifts! I know I do! Even now, with my kids being 21 and 23, I would rather have a home cooked meal than a store bought gift! So I decided to put together some great ways to show mom you care, without breaking the bank AND with some DIY tips! We are going to create a succulent garden, a beautiful flower arrangement (with flowers you can buy at the grocery store!) and more! So lets get started on our DIY Gifts journey! Watch the videos to see exactly how I did it!
DIY Gifts
Succulent Planter
This was super easy! It took me about 20-25 minutes to create both planters. But I love how they turned out! And you can make one for less than $30. The small planter cost about $27 and the larger planter was $43.
There are two different ways to go about planting succulents. I went about it the easy way. It is suggested to add 1 part gravel/sand mixture to 3 parts potting soil when planting succulents. But you can also use straight potting soil with the same success. I chose to use just potting soil when creating my planters.
Take a look at my video to see how I did it! All you need is a shallow planter, potting soil, your selection of succulents (Home Depot) and decorative rocks for the top dressing. And BAM! You have a fabulous DIY gifts! Check out the items I used below, all purchased through Amazon!
For the Garden Lover!
Purchase a cute gardening tool bag with tools for mom and place a beautiful annual or perennial in the bag for a wonderful gift mom can enjoy all summer! The tool kit with garden bag pictured has a 1 gallon plant in it! Mom can plant it and enjoy it for the entire summer!
Grocery Store Flowers: That Look Like They are from a Florist!
This is a DIY I could not do on my own! I can do magic with perennial beds and annual containers, but cut flowers are not my forte! So I got a little help from a friend who owns Pink Floral & Events in Larkspur, CO! Here are some tips she gave me!
Tips from a Professional
- Always look at the date on the flowers! And pick the flower bundle that has a “future” date. The flowers we got had a date of 4/8 and the date of purchase was 4/2. So those were the freshest flowers available.
- We bought extra greenery with our flower bundle for a fuller arrangement.
- Make sure there are no leaves in the water! So cut or remove any leaves that are low enough to end up in the water.
- One packet of flower food (it usually comes with the flowers) is good for up to 3 fresh water changes! So don’t pour the entire packet in! Only 1/3 of a packet should go in the water each day when the water is changed!
- GIVE YOUR FLOWERS FRESH WATER EVERY SINGLE DAY!
- When creating a beautiful arrangement, start with a 1/4″ tape grid. This helps keep the stems in place. Then add the greenery along the outside edge. And don’t forget to add your flower food!
- Cut the end of the stems at an angle so the flowers are able to drink the water without obstruction!
- Place your “hardy” stemmed flowers in first. Mums, roses, sunflowers, etc. Build either a “mound” or tall in the middle and then cascade lower on either side. You want to have depth!
- If you have a hydrangea bloom (as we did!) dip the cut end in Alum (you can find it in the spice aisle!) It keeps your bloom beautiful, longer!
- Another florist tip, if you have a carnation that isn’t fully open, pinch it at the base and “fluff” it for a fuller flower!
