6 Easy DIY Projects for Those on a Budget
Want to update your home, but don’t have the budget for a massive overhaul? Here are some fabulous ideas to get you started! I compiled 6 Easy DIY Projects for Those on a Budget, because I know what it is like to work on a budget! Take a look at what I have done myself to make updates in our home, and I didn’t break the bank!
Outlet Covers
When we purchased our home 15 years ago, the builder installed basic white, plastic outlet and switch covers. Boring! Shortly after we moved in, I decided to update the light switch and outlet covers! For less than $100 I was able to replace all the covers in my home! And they are so pretty! And I didn’t use the same style in every room! So don’t feel as though you have to do them all at once, a room at a time works too! Take a look at the before an after pictures! You can also replace heating vent covers!
Patio Furniture Redo
I had a patio set that was in very good condition. However, I was bored of the color and cushions. So I bought 5 cans of Rustoleum Black spray paint and painted the entire set from a dark green to black. Then I bought new chair cushions! What a difference that made! I love my back patio again!!! Plan on touching up or re-painting about every 2-3 years. Depending on use. I love the easy change and it makes it look like new! Notice my new pineapple candles holders too? Home Depot, for about $40 each!
Door Handle Swap
When we moved so many moons ago, we needed to find a house fast. The couple that purchased our home wanted a fast closing so we were under the gun to find a house. With a red hot housing market at the time, we ended up purchasing a house that was a builder spec home and it hand no upgrades. Extremely basic lighting, Formica counters, all basic grade finishes. But we took it in stride knowing we would be able to do the upgrades we wanted ourselves or higher someone to do them.
One of the first things I did was swap out the basic “ball” door handles for the more attractive door lever handles. Again, so very easy to do and it only took a couple hours to swap out all the door handles in our home!
Laundry Makeover
Last summer my son was at Officer Candidate School and I needed to “keep myself busy” for the 10 weeks he was gone. We are a very close knit family, so having my eldest leave the nest was stressful, but also productive as I got lots of little projects done!
So I decided to “pretty up” my laundry room! I added some cute wall art from Hobby Lobby, new baskets from Amazon and laundry catchers from IREA underneath the counter. The last thing I added was the pull out rolling shelves for in between the washer and dryer! I still need to get a new light fixture for in there, but hey, I am good for now! I would love to hear what you think!
Peel and Stick Flooring!
I would have never thought I would like “peel and stick” anything. But I wanted to re-do the floors in my upstairs bathroom and I wanted something easy. With that said, I decided to try peel and stick in the spare bathroom first. I figured I could always close the door if I didn’t like it! Right?? Turns out, I liked it so much I did it in my master bath too! and I cannot even begin to tell you how much I LOVE both! Check out my “wood” peel and stick post HERE! For my master bath flooring makeover CLICK HERE!
Each bathroom cost less than $125. And it would have probably cost even less had I not messed a up few tiles on each project! I always buy extra as I know I won’t get every piece perfect the first time! The first bathroom took me a weekend to complete, the master took a bit longer. But I could have done it in a weekend had I worked on it consistently!
Closet Makeover!
Holy cow, did I ever have fun doing a closet makeover! Although I have a walk-in closet, it is small for the amount of apparel I have! So I took my tiny closet and made it over so I would LOVE it! And I even got some extra storage space! I also had a small chandelier installed so it would be a true princess closet! Or as close to a princess closet as I could get! Now this project was a little more as I had new lighting installed. Electrical is not my forte! But it was still under $300, even with the electrician! Take a look at the before and afters and tell me what you think! CLICK HERE to see the entire post!
Conclusion
Even if you don’t have a large budget, you can still do small things to make your house a home AND have it look fabulous! And be on the lookout for my next TWO DIY projects! A chunky knit blanket (without using needles!) and using a stain gel on my bathroom cabinets!!! Both coming soon! Until then, enjoy these 6 Easy DIY Projects for Those on a Budget! I almost forgot to mention this easy fix too! We are having our kitchen (including the cabinets) painted this summer! And I decided I wanted under cabinet lighting. These fabulous soft white LED lights are perfect! They come as a set and it took three sets to do under all the cabinets! And I LOVE them! They have motion sensors and come on when someone walks in. These are great ideas! Your laundry room looks to be about the size of mine and I could definitely do with giving it a makeover. We’ve also been trying to update small things like light switches and faucets, and it’s amazing how much a small new thing like that really makes a big difference!
Kelly
Mine still needs more work, but for now, it is awesome!

These are some great budget DIY ideas! I recently changed the outlet covers and I didn’t realize how something so small would make a difference (at least to me – pretty sure my husband couldn’t tell you which were old and which were new!).
Kelly
I know! IT does make a huge difference!

I wish we were able to do a little more in our townhome, but no renovations are allowed here. Such a bummer! However, the floor option is really neat, and I like the idea of outlet covers where applicable! Super creative DIYs.

That is tough!!!
