Easy DIY Planters
My husband and I have owned a commercial lawn maintenance and landscaping company for 19 years. So after many years of planting annuals, and needing to do it fast, we have a system we can teach to anyone. So I am going to share with you how we make planting annuals easy! So lets start learning how to do easy DIY planters!
Getting Started
Rather than buying individual plants take a look at pre-made baskets. Pick baskets that have nice color or a variety of plants that you like. Make sure that your baskets will fit into your stationary planters. So if you buy a 12″ basket, your planter should be at least 24″ wide. So measure your planters before you do any purchasing!
Step by Step
Prep your stationary container. Be sure to use a high quality potting mix specific for containers. Also mix in a scoop of Osmocote. This is the best fertilizer have I found for planters. One scoop every 2-3 weeks is ideal to keep your plants healthy, happy and flowering all season long!
If your purchased planter has a hanger, cut the hanger off so you can easily remove the vegetation. See the picture and notice how I have my hand flat on the dirt so when I turn the basket over, I do not damage the plant stems or root ball.
Because of the location of the planter, I choose to use a large Begonia, pansies and sweet potato vines. My basket was 12″ and I was planting a 24″ container.
Once I had the Begonia planted, I then planted a row of pansies in front, and sweet potato vine in front of the pansies. This gives the container more color and dimension. It took me less than 20 minutes from start to finish. And when you are doing 38 various containers, speed is of the utmost importance! Here is the initial finished product!
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this post! The pictures below are 3 weeks after the initial plantings! I love making beautiful planters for our clients every year! Other than my blog, it is the one thing I love doing all the time! If you are looking for more Urban Gardening information, CLICK HERE!

Wow that is pretty simple. And the end result is fantastic! Using a basket definitely would take less time. Do you find that it is more expensive to do it this way or comparable?
Kelly
Comparable. Many hanging baskets are the same price or less expensive than getting all the individual plants. And much easier!!!

These turned out great! I love gardening, something about creating a beautiful arrangement or watching what you plant grow feels so good!

Thank you!!

Such a smart idea to take hanging baskets and turn them into container plants. I have two big containers, next to my pool, that need some pretty flowers. I am definitely doing this to brighten up the area.

Where is your favorite place to buy your flowers, etc for the containers??
Kelly
I have a “pop up” nursery about a mile from my house! They are there for about 2 months every spring and they have fabulous baskets!!!

These are so pretty, and you make it look super simple! I’m a little overwhelmed by anything plant or gardening related, but I will have to try this.

This is great! I’d love to get a few planters – we have a pretty small yard (we are in a condo) but we do have some porch space and it would be nice to have some flowers!
Kelly
You can always do a planter on your railing too!

Talk about beautiful! This makes me wish I had a place to put plants. Hopefully one day, when I have my own home, I’ll be able to do something like this!
