How to Improve Body Image

Needing to improve your body image? Here are nine types and tricks to do just that!

positive body image

Having a positive feeling about your body can be very challenging. The media presents us with people blessed with perfect bodies further enhanced with Botox, injections, false lashes, extensions and of course we can’t forget Photoshop. It can be easy to compare yourself to an unattainable physique and then feel bad about the cards you’ve been dealt. However, a healthy and attractive body can come in many shapes and sizes. You can have a healthy body image regardless of your current situation! Learn some tricks on how to improve your body image!

Learn to love the body you have with these strategies:

Ignore the magazines

The people on the covers of magazines are literally one in a million. Most of us don’t play professional sports, have a billion dollars, or make a living as a model or superstar. In real life, how many people have met that are capable of  being a model? Have reasonable expectations for yourself.

Focus on a Weight that Feels Good

You might think you look better at a lower body weight, but if you feel terrible, who cares? Choose the healthiest body weight that also feels good to you.  My daughter always says to me; “if you are your ideal weight on the scale, but look the same, would you be happy?”  She is wise beyond her years and she  is right.  Its not the number on the scale, it is how you feel.  Do you feel good?  Then that is all that matters. Feel good, eat healthy and take care of yourself.

Focus on What you CAN

Being able to walk and play the violin is a lot more impressive and meaningful than the ability to do 20 pull ups. No one has a body that’s perfect for every activity.  So focus on what makes you happy.  If that is crafting, great! For me, it is walking the dogs. Figure out what makes you happy and do it!

Identify your best three physical features

Take a look in the mirror and find a few things you like. Write them down. Put this list where you’ll see it often. I have one area I don’t like about myself, it is my stomach.  It is never flat enough or its bloated, or it hurts because I had dairy!  Its always something.  But I love my legs, butt and chest.  So every time I am hard on myself for what I call my “menopausal belly” I remind myself of the feature I love about myself.  So Remind yourself of those features you love each and every day.

Be active

Physical activity feels good on multiple levels. Research shows that those who exercise have a more positive body image than those who don’t. Get moving and notice how much better you feel about yourself.  Moving and exercising also releases endorphins which are natural mood boosters!

Avoid comparing yourself

Comparing yourself to others usually results in unfair feelings about yourself. Everyone’s body is simply different. No one body shape is any “better” than another.

 Avoid Checking Your Body

It’s common to put all your attention on what you feel is your worst body part. Cut down the number of times you check a specific body part in the mirror each day. You have more important things to do.  If you find yourself obsessing about your body, meditation can help to clear your mind and allow you to refocus. A few minutes of meditation can make a big difference.

Try affirmations

Instead of saying negative things to yourself, say something positive instead. Keep positive thoughts in your head and you’ll feel better about your body and yourself.

Be respectful of your body

If you treat your body respectfully, this means eating healthy foods, getting enough rest, and exercising regularly. Treat your body like it matters. You can’t live without it. And honestly, it is the only one you have.

Positive Body Image

A negative body image can affect people of all ages. While this occurs more commonly in females, males can also suffer from this significant challenge. Remember: everyone deserves to enjoy a healthy body image, including you! Having a positive body image, is all about how you see yourself.

Conclusion

Be appreciative of the body you have. You have every reason to love your body. After all, where would you be without it?

This is a message I wish all kids understood earlier in life than they do. As a high school teacher, I see so many issues.

Great tips, we definitely need to focus on what we can do instead of focusing on other things we can’t. I feel like affirmation helps me a lot.

This is awesome! Whenever I lack confidence in my body I remind myself of all the things it can do. It can stand for 10+ hours a day in surgery, it can control a 1200lb horse, these things show the true strength that I hold and reminds me just how strong I am! Great article.

Developing a positive body image is a challenge for many people. I struggled for years before I could accept my looks. But it was so liberating! Among all the effective points that you have put I would suggest that being active is a simplest exercise for positive view about everything.

great tips for boosting self confidence. A lot of people compare themselves with what they seen on movies and commercials and get depressed.
