Staying healthy doesn’t need to be hard! Fancy products filled with unnatural substances is not the way to keep your immune system strong. With Intermittent fasting for women over 50 we are going back to the basics and whole food nutrition is how we did it!! First up, intermittent fasting!
Intermittent Fasting for Women
I have been intermittent fasting since February of 2019. Since incorporating this technique, I have lost 17 lbs. My son, who was training for Officer Candidate School with the Marine Corps. introduced me to this practice! And it works! Of course, I also started cutting out much of the “processed” foods I was eating too!
The Facts and Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
What is intermittent fasting? It is the practice of eating only during a certain time each day. So you will be restricting your meal times to a specific, limited time period. I eat from 8 a.m. thru 6 p.m. So I don’t eat prior to 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m. on most days. I try to do it at least 5 days a week. My brother restricts his eating schedule even more, he only allows a 6 hour window to eat each day. Currently, he has lost 35 lbs and started running again!
Some of the benefits of intermittent fasting is as follows:
- Weight loss
- Improved focus
- Better Cardiovascular Health
- Reduced risk of age related diseases (cancer, diabetes, heart disease)
Intermittent fasting was arguably the fastest growing health trend of 2019. And with research still pouring in on the health benefits, it does not look to be slowing down in 2020!
Now keep in mind that not everything works for everyone. However, this has worked well for myself and family. So it may be worth a try!
Back to the basics: eating fruits and veggies
I realize there is tons of information on the internet about how to stay healthy. But we really need to get back to the basics. When I was a kid, there was not nearly the obesity rate, disease or general sickness that there is now. Our society has increasingly gotten unhealthier. We have GMO fruits and veggies, the fruit that is in our grocery stores no longer has the nutritional value it once did! And this is a fact! We have easy access to fast and easy processed foods that literally have no nutritional value. As America’s portions are out of control in restaurants and even in our own homes, we need to get back to eating whole food nutrition! And reducing our portion sizes!
What I Changed
Here is a list of some of the things I changed at the beginning of last year to help on my weight loss and health journey!
- Reducing refined sugar (I cut my sugar intake back significantly, but I still enjoy my sweets here and there!)
- Gluten free, almost! Whenever I can, I eat gluten free. However, I have yet to find a gluten free bread that I like. So I do enjoy a nice sandwich every once in a while!
- Processed food. Although I love to cook, we used to eat a lot of processed food when we were short on time. Not anymore, or at least rarely!
- Salads, salads and more salads! We eat A LOT of salad. Even when I make a nice meal, I normally have a salad to go with it! And cut back on the dressing! We use organic salad dressings or I make my own!
- Fruit! We love fruit. I incorporate it into our salads, oatmeal and as snacks! There is nothing wrong with natural carbs or sugar from fruit! So don’t let anyone tell you differently!
- Protein smoothies! I don’t have a smoothie everyday, but I love my chocolate peanut butter and peach smoothies! Whether for an after workout snack or a meal replacement. They are fabulous!
- Exercise, exercise and more activity in general! We have a Peloton bike which I love! But I also started walking the dogs more than once a day. Doing more activity than you were is better than none at all! Start small and build up if you need to! But don’t give up and do what makes you happy and isn’t a chore! Consistency is key!
Research
Ann Wigmore once stated “the food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” And this is so true. The research coming in about drinking soda, processed foods and the lack of nutrition in our food sources is overwhelming. But lets go over some published research on how whole food nutrition (fruits/veggies) can make a positive impact on your health!
- Cardiovascular wellness
- Supports healthy cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride metabolism
- Helps maintain healthy DNA
- Supports healthy lung function
- Reduces oxidative stress
- Supports healthy skin and gums
- And lets not forget that healthy carbs will help protect your brain!
- Supports a strong immune system! (this is by far the most important item in my opinion!)
And that is only a small sampling of how whole foods such as fruits and veggies can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle! There are so many other benefits that I can’t even count! Both big and small!
Conclusion
With all the information on the internet, you need to do what works for you! These things have worked for me! I don’t always practice what I preach, this has been a plan I have been able to stick to for almost a year! And I do intermittent fasting as a women over 50! Even when I had surgery on my knee in November and could not exercise for a while, I only gained 2 of those 17 lbs back! So it is a lifestyle change that has had a positive impact on my life! I hope you can help me. I’ve been doing IF most of the year. I lost 10 lbs at first, and for awhile now, I haven’t lost any more.
Someone suggested that my metabolism may be too low and maybe I should go a day here and there and not do IF. What do you think?
Kelly
I would change up your IF hours. So if you were eating only 8-5 p.m. Then shorten the eating window to 8-4 p.m. or 9-4 p.m. You might just need to mix it up a little. Sometimes your body becomes accustom to what you are doing. And I always had a break day, normally Saturday or Sunday that I did not do IF. I hope that helps!!!
