I love “urban gardening“! I have had a Tower Garden for 5 years and love it! So this Tower Garden Review will be full of useful information not only while in season but also for use inside during the winter! Living in Colorado, the weather is always unpredictable. I LOVE to garden–not to mention growing my own food for my family–but dealing with spring snow flurries and summer hail storms makes growing vegetables in Colorado a challenge! So I was THRILLED to find a way I can garden indoors AND outdoors all year long!
Tower Garden Review: What is a Tower Garden?
A Tower Garden is a vertical garden which enables you to have a farmer’s market on your porch or patio! It is easy to use as it is self watering, there is no dirt, no weeding and uses 90% less space than traditional gardens. Or you can do as I do: grow vegetables inside! This has helped me have an abundance of fresh veggies in an urban garden setting. We do not have a large yard, but I love to garden, so this was the perfect match!
What Seedlings to Plant in a Tower Garden
You can either grow your own seedlings or purchase them. My favorite site to purchase seedlings from is Living Towers. There there is always a great variety of seedlings to choose from and there is an awesome sense of satisfaction when they show up and you can just “pop” the seedlings into your tower! The seedlings are planted in rock wool cubes. There are 20 “pockets” on a single tower to insert a variety of produce. Most importantly, there is no dirt needed! Therefore, no weeding!
What Can You Grow in a Tower Garden?
You can plant over 150 different varieties you can plant in your Tower Garden!! The only vegetable you can’t grow in the Tower Garden, is a root vegetable. Apart from that, you can grow fresh vegetables, herbs, and even flowers–turning any home into a dreamy urban garden! Here is 24 different plants on what to grow in your Tower Garden just to give you an idea:
- Arugula
- Basil
- Green Beans
- Brussels Sprouts
- Cabbage
- Cauliflower
- Cilantro
- Chars
- Chives
- Cucumbers
- Dill
- Eggplant
- Kale
- Lettuce
- Oregano
- Peas
- Peppers
- Rosemary
- Sage
- Spinach
- Squash
- Strawberries
- Tomatoes
- Thyme
Do You Put your Tower Garden Inside or Outside?
Every year, I start my Tower Garden inside so my seedlings have a good base. However, I purchased the LED grow light package to keep my plants thriving while waiting for the weather to warm up enough to put on the patio. I usually start harvesting my tomatoes towards the end of June and they keep producing through mid/end of September! Which is amazing! Once the growing season is done outside you can then make the decision to bring the Tower Garden inside again for the winter, or clean it out and take a break! Because I grow it in our basement, I choose to take a break each fall and start up again in the early winter. This year, I didn’t start again until spring. But it can be used to grow produce year around, as long as you have the grow lights.
When to Harvest Tower Garden Plants
When done properly, harvesting can start after 3-5 weeks of growing! Most lettuces and some herbs are ready to be harvested at 3-5 weeks. Imagine how much money you could save? Not to mention all the benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables! You can grow just about anything on a Tower Garden. As long as it is not a root vegetable you should have success growing!
My Fresh Vegetable Recipes
I have so much fun maintaining and harvesting from this easy-to-use garden! And to have fresh leafy greens and herbs all year long, is amazing! With all the Covid-19 restrictions I could not be happier in having fresh veggies at my disposal! One of my favorite things to do is cook with fresh veggies and herbs. Here are some of my delicious fresh vegetable recipes that I make using my Tower Garden!
Tower Garden Tips and Tricks for a Plentiful Bounty
- Turn daily: if only a part of your Tower Garden is in the sun turn it a quarter turn each day! That way you have uniform growth!
- Monitor the following weekly:
- pH level is between 5.5-6.5. pH will fluctuate as plants grow. After adding nutrients, use the pH kit included with your Tower Garden to test the level each week.
- Water temperature is between 65-85 degrees. Keeping your Tower Garden on a dolly will help keep the water regulated. On hot days you can add frozen water bottles to the reservoir.
- Water reservoir is full. As the plants get bigger, you will need to add water more frequently. However, 2-3 times a week is the most I have had to “top off” the reservoir.
- Check plant leaves for signs of pests or disease. I have not had an issue with either, however, depending on where you live it may happen.
- Clean monthly. This is a suggestion. I give mine a good scrubbing prior to starting the season and then once or twice during the season if needed!
- Trim roots in the reservoir! This is important! As your plants get bigger, their roots will grow into the reservoir. If they become too long, they will hinder the pump and may cause it to burn out.
- Harvest when ready! Once your crops are ready, some herbs are ready in less than 3 weeks, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor! And if you have never had freshly grown lettuces, then you have no idea what you are missing!
Choosing the Right Tower Garden: Home vs Flex
Tower Garden HOME
The Tower Garden HOME is perfect for someone who doesn’t have lots of space and wants to grow year-round indoors. The HOME is suitable for growing fresh greens and herbs, and has built in LED grow lights to ensure your plants are getting the light they need.
Tower Garden FLEX
The Tower Garden FLEX is a larger, customizable tower that can support larger fruits and veggies. This tower can be used indoors or outdoors, however, you will need to purchase accessories if you’re looking to keep it inside. That being said, it has a 20-gallon water reservoir, so your plants are sure to stay hydrated no matter where you put your tower.

Wow i’m very interested in this option for some herbs. I have very little space to plant and my dog loves to lift his leg to and elevate it to any green he sees in my yard.
I would definitely have room on my patio for this.
Kelly
Hahahaha! Dogs are awesome but can be little buggers sometimes!!! =)

I’m intrigued! In these uncertain times it seems like a smart idea to grow your own food when you can!

Great write-up. We’re new to Colorado, and last summer almost nothing survived the blasting sun of NE Colorado (we’re in Longmont).
We’re going to try a place with LESS sun this summer, the way our yard is aligned, it’s hard to avoid the afternoon sun from noon to dusk. Our other option is sunrise until about noon. Last summer we put it where it got sun all day and it was not good 😬
If you have tips on what best survives in our summer sun, I’d love to know.
Kelly
Thank you! I have mine on my patio and it gets morning and early afternoon sun! That seems to be the perfect combo. Anytime I have flowers or plants in the afternoon sun, they have an afternoon “wilt” and take a ton of water! Let me know how it goes!=)

Thanks, Kelly!

No problem at all!!!
